The Physiotherapy Service at Heavitree Hospital offers expert spinal assessments and interventions.

The Physiotherapy Department at Heavitree Hospital can be contacted on 01392 405011.

 

This includes:

  • Manual Therapy

  • Dysfunction Analysis and Correction

  • Education and Management Strategies

 

Two Spinal Rehabilitation Classes are also run from the Heavitree site. All patients are assessed individually and are assigned to one of the structured exercise programmes, if deemed appropriate.

Spinal Rehabilitation Class

Aims of programme

  • Improve cardiovascular fitness

  • Improve ‘core stability’ / abdominal muscles to strengthen back

  • Improve understanding of the ‘lower back’

  • Learn strategies to manage symptoms

  • Teach structured exercise programme that can be continued at home

 

Programme Details

The programme is 6 weeks in duration and runs periodically on Tuesdays,

Wednesdays, or Fridays. Each session last an hour and a half and comprises

of education and exercise.

 

Educational Talks

  • Introduction to programme

  • Anatomy, posture and ‘normal’ movement

  • Benefits of exercise

  • Recurrent low back pain

  • Pacing strategies

  • Managing ‘flare-ups’ and relaxation

  • Accessing exercise in the community

 

Exercise Session

12 stations of 4 minute duration

  • 4 Cardiovascular stations

  • 4 Mat-based exercise stations

  • 3 Functional based exercise stations

  • 1 Gym ball exercise station

  • Stretching/warm down

  • Implement pacing strategies to manage symptoms

  • Improve function

  • Reduce fear and anxiety

  • Teach structure exercise programme that can be continued at home

The programme is 6 weeks in duration and runs periodically on Wednesdays. Each session last an hour and comprises of education and exercise.

 

Exercise Session

  • Warm-up

  • Circuit of 12 exercise stations of 1-3 minute duration

    • Cardiovascular exercise

    • Muscle conditioning

  • Cool-down and stretching
